2-Day Specialist Workshop on Ayres Sensory Integration and Sensory Processing for People with Learning Disabilities

This specialist workshop will explore the theory and application of Ayres Sensory Integration (ASI), providing insights into how sensory integration and processing differences can impact the daily functioning, behaviour, and emotional well-being of individuals with learning disabilities.

Attendees will gain practical skills for conducting sensory assessments, designing individualised sensory interventions, and creating sensory-friendly environments that align with the NHS England standards for mental health inpatient services and learning disabilities.

Workshop Highlights:

  • Deep dive into the principles of Ayres Sensory Integration and its relevance to learning disabilities
  • Practical strategies for sensory assessment and intervention planning
  • Collaborative approaches within multidisciplinary teams
  • Exploration of sensory-friendly environments following NHS guidance
  • Evidence-based practices to enhance participation and quality of life for individuals with learning disabilities

Learning Outcomes:

By the end of this workshop, participants will be able to:

  1. Understand Sensory Integration and Processing
    • Explore and develop an early understanding of the principles of Ayres Sensory Integration and its application for people with learning disabilities, focusing on sensory sensitivities (hypersensitivity and hyposensitivity), poor praxis, bilateral integration and sequencing difficulties and postural control challenges; and their impact on daily life.
  2. Conduct Sensory Screening Assessments
    • Utilise sensory screening assessment tools to identify possible sensory integration and processing challenges and preferences, and develop personalised sensory profiles for individuals with learning disabilities.
  3. Develop Individualized Sensory Strategy Based Interventions
    • Design and implement tailored sensory strategy-based supportive interventions, including sensory diets and environmental modifications, to support self-regulation and participation in everyday activities.
  4. Create Sensory-Friendly Environments
    • Apply knowledge of sensory-friendly practices, aligning with the NHS England ‘Sensory-Friendly Resource Pack’ and ‘Culture of Care Standards for Mental Health Inpatient Services’, to create environments that accommodate sensory needs and reduce sensory overload.
  5. Collaborate within Multidisciplinary Teams
    • Work effectively within multidisciplinary teams to deliver comprehensive, person-centred sensory support, ensuring consistency across clinical, school, and home settings.
  6. Promote Emotional Regulation and Participation
    • Support individuals with learning disabilities in developing coping strategies to manage sensory overload and motor challenges and to promote emotional regulation, enhancing their participation in daily activities.
  7. Integrate Evidence-Based Practice
    • Stay informed about the latest research and guidelines on sensory integration and processing to ensure high-quality, evidence-based interventions for individuals with learning disabilities.
